Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1. The
government’s assistance for Indonesia’s estimated 4
million ojol (app-based motorcycle taxi) drivers, who are among the
informal workers most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
|
2. Amid the
coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. government has a three-stage prescription for
restarting normal life in America.
|
|
3.
Indonesia is struggling to acquire the necessary kits to conduct polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) testing on a massive scale given the surge in global
demand, the government’s spokesperson for COVID-19 affairs has said.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. This
idea was reinforced by the image of President Joko "Jokowi"
Widodo's car, with its trunk open, and his security officers handing out an
estimated 400 staple food packages to ojol drivers in the Harmoni
area of Central Jakarta last week. The gesture followed the issuance of
Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 18/2020, which was also passed on
the same day, giving ojol drivers legal leeway to transport passengers, despite
a previous Health Ministry regulation that prohibited them from carrying
customers as part of the efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. They
initially were only permitted to transport goods. State-owned oil and gas
company Pertamina also announced on Tuesday that a total of 10,000 ojol drivers would be eligible for 50
percent cashback when they purchased non-subsidized fuel
through the firm’s app MyPertamina. Tadjudin Noer Effendi, a labor expert
from Gadjah Mada University, suspected that the government’s gestures were
due to the political power that the drivers wield through sheer numbers,
their ability to coordinate protests and the solidarity among them.

2.
"We're opening up our great country again," announced President
Donald Trump at a coronavirus task force briefing on Thursday where the
guidelines were unveiled. "We're going to be very vigilant and very
careful."
A 14-day downward trajectory in COVID-19
cases and widespread coronavirus and antibody testing for hospital workers
are suggested for individual states before beginning the phased restart of
economies that are convulsing because of the highly infectious virus.
In the first phase, schools and bars
would remain closed. But places of worship, restaurants, movie theaters, gyms
and sports arenas could reopen with strict physical distancing. Hospitals
could perform elective surgeries.
In Phase 2, schools could reopen, and
nonessential travel could resume, but most employees would be encouraged to
continue to telework.
The third phase recommends
"unrestricted staffing of work sites," but would see the medically
vulnerable resuming public interactions, with them practicing physical
distancing unless they take precautionary measures.
|
|
3. The
government needs to reach the figure not only to detect new cases but also to
find out whether there have been any recoveries, as patients with moderate
symptoms might need to undergo the test four times, while those with severe
symptoms might need to get tested even more than that.Aside from efforts to
obtain supplies of reagents, Yurianto said the government would opt to use
rapid molecular testing equipment commonly used to detect tuberculosis
bacteria, which with adjusted cartridges can detect the Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19.Yurianto
said there were 957 such machines in 456 cities and regencies across the
country, but only 305 were compatible, as they were produced after 2018. This
option, however, is not without its share of problems, as the demand for such
cartridges, produced in a limited amount by the United States, was on the
rise elsewhere. Yurianto said the government had ordered 23,000 cartridges
this month, which could be used to run the same number of tests, but they
would arrive in stages, with the first 3,000 cartridges currently on the way.

Newsworthy
event (Main event)
|
1.More than 45 million Indonesians
students are holed up at home for the rest of the academic year, as schools
close to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease. Much like the rest of the
world, these children face some of the longest no-school days in history,
without much certainty of when it all will end.
|
2. Amid the COVID-19
pandemic, Harvard University, a private Ivy League research university in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, is offering 67 free online courses for those
who want to expand their knowledge and master new skills during
self-quarantine.

Indonesian capital.

Background
event (Elaboration)
|
1. A new educational
program airing on public broadcaster TVRI might provide a good opportunity
for more students across the archipelago to do their schoolwork from home.
The Belajar dari Rumah program, which began airing on Mondays to
give students a change of pace during the COVID-19 quarantine, is the
brainchild of the Education and Culture Ministry and is welcomed by many
parents and children alike. The program features 30-minute blocks on a
certain school lesson for different levels of instruction, beginning at 8
a.m. and finishing at 11 a.m. from Monday to Friday. It covers six groups of
instructional levels: kindergarten, grades 1-3, grades 4-6, junior high
school, senior high school and a program for parents and teachers.
|
2. The courses range in
duration from a week to 15 weeks, with subjects that include programming,
health and medicine, social sciences, computer science, art and design,
business and humanities and many more. Although the classes are free, they
require commitment from the online students. Once you choose a subject, a
list of programs will appear as options, with duration, time commitment, pace
and difficulty level specified. After choosing a course, an application form
must be filled out to get access to the course material. Since the outbreak,
many institutions and companies have been working toward keeping the public
educated and productive through free e-learning initiatives. Among them is
Tokyo-based optics and imaging products corporation Nikon, which recently
launched free online photography courses that are available throughout April.

3. Long before Tanah
Abang in Central Jakarta was known for textiles and traffic jams, the
district began life as a camp for the troops of Sultan Agung of the Mataram
Kingdom – in 1628. The first settlement in Tanah Abang dates to around 1650
and the market itself opened in 1735. In 1863, a Dutch businessman named
Jannus Theodorus Bik purchased a piece of land in Tanah Abang, which included
a country house and most of the land of, and properties in, Pasar Tanah
Abang. Now, more than 150 years later, a descendant of the Bik family has
successfully chronicled the history of his family, along with the records of
Tanah Abang, over the last two centuries. Titled 250 Years in Old
Jakarta, the book is the brainchild of Sven Verbeek Wolthuys, who has been
researching the history of Jakarta for more than 30 years. Though he was born
in the Netherlands, he moved to Sydney, Australia, with his family in 2007. During
a visit to The Jakarta Post’s office, Wolthuys said he wrote the book as
a result of the encouragement of people around him. The journey started 30
years ago, when his grandmother told him stories about her childhood in Tanah
Abang.

|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. Drinking
jamu alone will not protect the body from illness, as one must also practice
good hygiene, exercise routinely, consume a balanced diet, get enough rest
and adhere to physical distancing standards. Some Indonesians rely on jamu
(traditional herbal drink) to maintain their wellness. However, jamu is not
to be used as medicine or to treat or prevent illness, especially during the
COVID-19 pandemic, experts have said. “Jamu is not for everyone,” Raissa
Edwina, a nutritionist from the Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC) in South
Jakarta, told kompas.com. “Jamu can cause allergic reactions or problems in
blood coagulation for certain people.” It is also important to know what is
put inside drinks that are marketed as healthy. Many variations of jamu, for
example, are full of large amounts of sugar, which increases the risk of
diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Raissa said herbal drinks
should be made at home or purchased from trusted sources to ensure that they
are not full of artificial ingredients. Sports nutritionist Emilia Achmadi
said that, while herbal drinks could be used as a supplement to strengthen
the immune system, they were not intended for the treatment of COVID-19. “The
public needs to know it has not been clinically proven that herbal [drinks]
can cure a disease,” Emilia said. Drinking jamu alone will not protect the
body from illness, as one must also practice good hygiene, exercise
routinely, consume a balanced diet, get enough rest and adhere to physical
distancing standards.

2. The
effectiveness of cloth masks depends on the fabric’s ability to filter
particles while still being comfortable to wear. According to the University
of Utah Health, in the United States, cotton and T-shirt fabrics can be used
as materials. And even if your face is covered, it is important to avoid
touching the mask’s surface and to wash your hands properly for 20 seconds
after wearing them. Washing your reusable cloth masks is equally important as
virus droplets may stick to their surfaces and it's highly recommended to
clean them after each use. The CDC note that the frequency of washing
your masks depends on how often they are worn. Dimitar Marinov, assistant
professor of the Medical University of Varna’s department of hygiene,
told Huffington Post that people should wash
their masks every two hours, especially when they’re in public places where
physical distancing can be a challenge. The way you wash your fabric face
masks should be adjusted to the type of fabric. The CDC recommend putting
cloth face coverings in washing machines. Similarly, the University of Utah
Health also recommends that fabric masks are cleaned
with hot water (71.1 degrees Celsius) in a washing machine with soap or
detergent. Afterward, rinse them with water and hang them to dry. If a
washing machine isn’t available, dermatologist Emily de Golian suggests
hand-washing by using soap or detergent and scrubbing for a minimum of 20
seconds with warm water, according to cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com.

3. The
increasing activity was recorded on Friday morning at around 6 a.m., the
Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) confirmed, citing
that the mountain had persistently erupted and expelled lava from its crater
since the beginning of April. "For now, the volcano will potentially
expel lava and hot ash in the direction of the Besuk Bang, Besuk Kobokan and
Besuk Kembar deltas," the PVMBG staff member in charge of monitoring
Mount Semeru, Kristyanto, said as reported by kompas.com. Authorities, however, still maintained
caution in the alert status for the volcano, which is the second-highest
level, despite the increasing activity. A top official at the Lumajang
Disaster Mitigation Agency, Wawan Hadi, separately called on local residents
not to panic yet remain alert.

people were killed by a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Sumatra, an

Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. Nine
people were killed by a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Sumatra, an
Indonesian official said Sunday. The accident happened Saturday in South
Solok in West Sumatra province when a group of 12 people were digging for
gold at an abandoned mine. The area has several abandoned mines from the
colonial era. "Eight men and one woman went in to dig and were
buried by a landslide. We evacuated their bodies early this morning,"
district spokesman Firdaus Firman told AFP. Three people keeping watch
reported the accident to local officials when the group failed to emerge from
the mine. The victims were local farmers digging the gold without proper
equipment or protective gear. The location and the rainy weather also
hampered rescue efforts. "All victims are accounted for and there's
no more missing," Firman said, adding that police and the local disaster
agency are investigating. Illegal and unlicensed mines are prevalent
across mineral-rich Indonesia and the scene of frequent accidents. In
early 2019 at least 16 people were buried alive when a mine collapsed in the
Bolaang Mongondow region of North Sulawesi, where five miners were killed a
few months earlier in a similar accident.

2. Parents
may be joking on social media about their childcare hell as more and more
countries go into lockdown with the coronavirus. But child protection professionals
are not laughing. They have real worries about the risks with families locked
up 24/7 together for an indefinite period.
'Step away!'
Its WhatsApp groups already have 4,000
members dispensing support and tips on how to stay zen.First among them is
"step away when you feel the tension mount [even if that means locking
the toilet door]". Parents should also watch funny videos with their
children, "and program in 'off' times when you can be on your own...
while someone else looks after the children".
'Relax the rules'
Governments have the same worry, with the
French children's ministry warning of a "higher risk of mistreatment...
and since it will be happening at home, it will be hard to spot." "Stay
at home parents are more vulnerable to burnout," Mikolajczak said, an
effect likely to be exacerbated by the fact they are there against their will.

3. By Pandu
W. Soeprapto
My wife and I, as well as many other
parents out there, want the best for our beloved little angels. We provide a
home to protect them from the heat or cold, and as a place where they can
freely share their joys, sorrows and creativity without fear of
judgment. We provide a car and take them on adventurous, yet safe trips –
almost always paradoxically along bumpy roads. We provide
nourishing foods to support their physical and mental growth;
clothes they can play in and run around anywhere they like.
On top of all this, we provide them with
a good and proper education that will stimulate and nurture their minds,
skills and passions, so they can thrive in this ever-changing,
competitive life. we can
share two things that might help you determine the
right educational path for your children.
1. Prepare early
The rule of thumb for achieving any monetary
goals is to start early, as early as you possibly can. By doing
this, you force time to be on your side. Having a longer time to prepare
means that you can accumulate more funds and take advantage of the effects
of compounding.
2. Where is the best place to invest?
Ideally, it is better to invest in
instruments that have potentially high yields. However, not everyone
has the sufficient knowledge or expertise to engage in such investment
activities, and investing in an instrument we don’t understand is not
advisable, mainly because we don't know what affects its value. Therefore,
rather than becoming confused at the outset over where to put your funds,
start investing in the instruments you know best. Along the way, you can
use the time created by starting early to broaden your investment
options to improve the returns of your investment portfolio. And let's not
forget saving: everything starts from saving. Be more efficient in
how you save money to close the gap between your actual fund at end of the
investment period and the real education costs you need to cover. There is no
guarantee that the future will turn out as we hope. So, start now. Learn
and unlearn a lot; rinse and repeat until you discover what
works best for you in preparing for your child’s education, so you
can support them in soaring high toward their dreams.
